“Let there be light”

What makes a white paper white? It all comes down to light. Visible light waves are categorised by length, and the length of the wave determines the colours we see. Violet wavelengths, at about 400 nanometres, are the shortest and red wavelengths, at about 700 nanometres, are the longest waves of the visible light spectrum.

White light contains all colours. So what makes a paper white is, in effect, its ability to reflect equal amounts of red, green and blue light – the entire visual spectrum. It is really less a matter of being ‘white’ than of containing all colours.

A truly white paper reflects the entire visual spectrum in equal amounts. The more white, the higher the degree of colour reflectance and the greater the possible spectral range. The lower the whiteness, the less complete the spectrum of reflected light, which can result in dull, lack-lustre appearance.

Colour Management Tips

What designers can do to manage colour2019-07-03T22:02:37+02:00
  • Help manage colour by designing in visually neutral surroundings; patterns and strong colours in the background affect how we perceive screen colour. Ambient light, like sunlight on the screen, will also affect contrast

  • To help manage colour expectations, remember that every digital device has its own specific colour gamut with a limited range of colours. Even devices of the same make and model can differ from each other, which is why the colour on your screen may look slightly different from what your colleague is seeing on his or her screen. Also, as digital devices age, their ability to render colour changes

  • Remember that the quality and weight of the paper you use will affect colour fidelity

  • Ask your offset printer to provide their ICC colour profile so you can view it on your system and match it to your colour space

  • Consult with your customer before you convert from RGB to CMYK so you can match their colour profile and printing conditions

  • Think beyond print when preparing files. These days the same design may be used on different media – different types of paper, billboards, the Internet, plastic, etc.

  • Always retain an RGB version of the original document for all eventualities

How to make correct colour proofing2019-07-03T10:11:23+02:00
  • Choose colour proofing paper that is able to simulate both colour gamut and paper shade of your printing process

  • Linearise and profile your proofer using the proofing paper in question

  • Make sure you are using correct press ICC-profile for print simulation

  • Use absolute colourimetric rendering to simulate paper shade

  • Use a commonly accepted colour control wedge (e.g. Ugra / Fogra Media Wedge) for quality control

  • Mark your proofs with the results of quality control measurement – this will show the printer that proof can be trusted

How to standardise printing2019-07-03T11:17:05+02:00
  • Design in visually neutral surroundings; patterns and strong colours in the background affect how we perceive screen colour. Ambient light, like sunlight on the screen, will also affect contrast

  • Remember that every digital device has its own specific colour gamut with a limited range of colours. Even devices of the same make and model can differ from each other, which is why the colour on your screen may look slightly different from what your colleague is seeing on his or her screen. Also, as digital devices age, their ability to render colour changes

  • Keep your monitor and laser/inkjet printer accurately calibrated. Calibration should be done at least once a month, and preferably every two weeks. A choice of monitor proofing software is available at affordable prices

What is Grey balance?2019-07-03T22:08:40+02:00
  • Grey balance has traditionally been targeted to 50% K vs C50%, M40%, Y40%

  • In modern ICC-based picture workflow this does not necessarily qualify anymore

  • ECI / bvdm has developed a concept where corresponding CMY percentages are taken from ICC- profile data by checking which K50% Lab-values correspond to which CMY combination
